I remember a few years back trying to find songs for Mission Month and Baptist Care Sunday about serving others, and there weren’t that many. God of Justice was really the only one that talked about caring for people and I chose it every time. Today when I went looking I was excited to see there are a few more to choose from. Reaching out to people who are poor, lost and broken with God’s love is our greatest mission and we should sing about it!
I love the words of the first song “For the One”, and the chorus
“Help me to love with open arms, like You do
A love that erases all the lines and sees the truth
So that when they look in my eyes, they would see You..” is also my prayer-to love others like Jesus.
“Follow you” is a song I stumbled upon and was new to me but again the words are perfect:
“Follow You into the homes of the broken
Follow You into the world
Meet the needs for the poor and the needy God
Follow You into the world
Use my hands use my feet
To make Your kingdom come
To the corners of the earth
Until Your work is done”
But if we sing them we are asking God to lead us to the needy, to be His hands and feet. Do we really mean it?
Do we help people in hard times?
Do we stand up for others?
Do we point our friends and others to Jesus?
I had to include God of Justice and Hosanna as they are amongst my favourites as well as having a clear message about going into the world to love people, help them, bring justice and tell them about God. I love the line “Break my heart for what breaks yours”. We can’t look past the hurt in this world. Our hearts need to break for the lost so that we show them there is a Saviour and He is Jesus.
